Lao People's Democratic Republic
The goal of the Laos Livelihoods Improvement Project is to improve the quality of life, through community-based and self-managed rural development initiatives, for people living in 20 selected villages across Mune and Samoui districts of Lao PDR.
The end of project review scope included all program activities from 2009 to 2013. Methods included field data collection using qualitative and participatory methodologies with stakeholder input from men, women, village management committees, and key stakeholders.
The program was found to have contributed to some improvements in livelihoods and health. Activities found contributing to food security included rice banks and small livestock revolving funds. In addition, activities contributing to health included improving sanitation and increasing access to healthcare. The approach of working with government district staff resulted in cost efficiencies as well as sustainability of the project learning. Future lessons included building space for reflective and increased community feedback into project design and implementation.
